Program Overview

The University of Connecticut will begin offering a Professional Master of Science degree in Athletic Training (MSAT), with the first cohort starting in May 2019. The Professional MSAT program provides students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be a certified athletic trainer. The full-time, two-year program will provide students with a didactic and clinical curriculum that addresses the professional education standards as established by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students are prepared to become evidence-based health care professionals through a combination of classroom, clinical education, and even research experiences. The program at the University of Connecticut is unique in its ability to expose students to diversified clinical education experiences with a focus in either intercollegiate athletics or youth sports and the opportunity to learn from experts in the fields of sport safety, through the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI), and musculoskeletal injury prevention and rehabilitation.

 

Prerequisite Admissions Requirements

Prospective students interested in pursuing the Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training program must meet the following prerequisites:

• Must have earned a bachelor’s degree in any discipline
• Transcript verification that the following college courses have been completed within the past (7) years:
  • Biology
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II*
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Psychology
  • Statistics
  • Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology
  • Nutrition

(*The requirement for Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II can be substituted with separate Human Anatomy and Human Physiology courses)

Apply online using the Athletic Training Centralized Application Service (ATCAS) (available Fall 2018). **The First cohort of students will begin in May 2019**

 

Using the ATCAS service, you will be required to submit the following:

1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
2. Official transcripts using the Transcript Request Form
3. Course Descriptions for all Prerequisite Courses
4. Request 3 Letters of Recommendation
5. Provide a Statement of Interest and Professional Goals. The statement is important aspect of the application, as it is the chance for the program faculty to learn more about you and your reasons for applying to the program. The statement should define your characteristics as a person and a future health care provider. The MS in Athletic Training program is rigorous and time intensive, thus students are encouraged to reflect on their strengths and ability to succeed.
6. Review and confirm the technical standards for the program.
