Our Program

Program Overview

The Professional Athletic Training Program (ATP) at the University of Connecticut is committed to providing students with a well-rounded educational experience. We are very proud of our program and it's continued growth. For more information please visit: https://athtrain.kins.uconn.edu/

Additionally, we are in the process of developing an accelerated 3+2 program with Athletic Training. Students who choose this track can finish their Master’s degree in 5 years vs the traditional 6 years.

We are housed in the Department of Kinesiology, within the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, which offers students the chance to learn and interact with faculty in the areas of exercise science, athletic training, and physical therapy. Our faculty at UConn includes nationally renowned experts in exertional heat illnesses, hydration, sports nutrition, injury prevention/biomechanics, neuromuscular control, exercise physiology, physical therapy, and work/life balance. Our academically competitive professional masters program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Degree Programs

Our Athletic Training Program has transitioned to a Professional Master’s degree program, as was mandated by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Our last undergraduate cohort will graduate in May 2020. We are no longer accepting undergraduate cohorts. The first Master’s degree cohort began in May, 2019 with an expected graduation in May 2021 and we are continually reviewing applications for incoming cohorts.

Upon completion of the Professional Master’s degree, students will be eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination.  Once a student successfully passes the BOC examination, they are eligible to apply for athletic training licensure. The program is proud of its BOC exam pass rate for our undergraduate program, and will look to continue this tradition into our Professional Master’s degree program. Click on these links to see the program’s BOC exam statistics, as well as graduate and placement rates.

Athletic Training Profession

Athletic Training is an allied health care profession which has been formally recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) since 1991. It is defined by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) as the “prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.” Athletic Trainers are often seen on the field helping in the treatment of sports-related injuries. Off the field, they also work with active populations in helping to bring injured people back to healthy activity or sports play. The Certified Athletic Trainer, in cooperation with physicians and other allied health care professionals, is an integral member of the health care team. You can learn more about the profession of Athletic Training by visiting the website of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association.
